Marquis/Hoops/Bryony

Hi guys - hope you're having a good weekend.

As requested, this is the website I found where you can download Marquis de Sade related PDF files:

http://supervert.com/elibrary/marquis_de_sade

There are three of his own works ("120 Days of Sodom", "Philosophy In The Bedroom" and a short story), an early biography, and thoughts/trivia compiled by Roland Barthes.

In the latter piece is a very interesting (and mightily confusing...) fact, which is that the Marquis de Sade had a phobia of the sea! Apparently he wrote, "I've always feared and immensely disliked the sea..." (in Barthes, 1971:5) Not quite sure what to make of that. I reckon that Carter probably knew about this since she would have done a lot of research on him for her essays - so why the Marquis' sea obsession in the story??

Boo hiss to the rude hoop man. Probably bitter about the Olympics like everyone else in circus... I've managed to get in touch with my friend Simon and he's going to look into it for me. I'll contact him again next week - but it will be good to decide asap if we want one. Personally, I'll pull out all the stops to get hold of one (and learn how to use the thing properly!) if we feel it serves the scene.

Also, I wanted to raise a concern regarding Bryony Lavery. I'm just a bit worried about bombarding her with a massive list of questions - perhaps she could initially be emailed an invite and a request to answer some questions, and then if she's up for it then we could look through the questions we have and distill them to half a dozen or so. I just think that, if I were suddenly emailed with 16+ questions to answer, I would be a bit overwhelmed and less inclined to come to the performance. Just a thought...

  1. i think you r absolutely right regarding Bryony Lavery, i think we should invite her first, see how she reacts and then kindly ask her if we could ask her some questions, before bombarding her with lots of questions
