Just sharing a link for a black silk dress for Rachel's rock n roll entrance..
www.allsaintsshop.co.uk/product/parachute_dress_short/?searchtext=&category_id=22
Now, Krish and Jules DON'T PANIC! We're not planning to buy this actual one, just to make our own version of it. We reckon we can create a pretty good copy by getting a black slip, sewing lots of curved panels of black "I-can't-believe-it's-not-silk" on it and hitching them up.
We think that, with the addition of hair, make-up, boots and ripped stockings, it will give the wild rock-chick look that the Mother needs for her entrance. It would also be the dress that the Marquis sends her at the beginning, making for sweet revenge on the Mother's part.
Also, please don't take it personally if we haven't drawn your potential costume yet - it's simply because some costumes have been more difficult to design while the character has been developing. The run yesterday gave all of us in Costume a clearer picture of the characters and their journeys, so we now have more ideas and will be creating further designs in the next week.
The main goals for the Costume Department this week are as follows:
* Create one Girl's basic costume (onto which extras will be added for each scene) - we'll use Jenny for this
* Design initial costumes for all remaining characters - obviously the designs will be subject to approval by Lucy, but expect to see them pinned up in the Production Office for perusal. Hopefully we can finalise what everyone's costume is by the end of the week, as time is ticking in a most disturbing fashion...
* Begin work on costumes we already know need making pretty much from scratch - mainly the Nanny, but also the Girl's nightdress, and the Dead Women
* Supply a Ruby Choker and Opal Rings for rehearsals - do comment if you feel there is anything else urgently required for rehearsals.

Marquis/Hoops/Bryony
Hi guys - hope you're having a good weekend.
As requested, this is the website I found where you can download Marquis de Sade related PDF files:
http://supervert.com/elibrary/marquis_de_sade
There are three of his own works ("120 Days of Sodom", "Philosophy In The Bedroom" and a short story), an early biography, and thoughts/trivia compiled by Roland Barthes.
In the latter piece is a very interesting (and mightily confusing...) fact, which is that the Marquis de Sade had a phobia of the sea! Apparently he wrote, "I've always feared and immensely disliked the sea..." (in Barthes, 1971:5) Not quite sure what to make of that. I reckon that Carter probably knew about this since she would have done a lot of research on him for her essays - so why the Marquis' sea obsession in the story??
Boo hiss to the rude hoop man. Probably bitter about the Olympics like everyone else in circus... I've managed to get in touch with my friend Simon and he's going to look into it for me. I'll contact him again next week - but it will be good to decide asap if we want one. Personally, I'll pull out all the stops to get hold of one (and learn how to use the thing properly!) if we feel it serves the scene.
Also, I wanted to raise a concern regarding Bryony Lavery. I'm just a bit worried about bombarding her with a massive list of questions - perhaps she could initially be emailed an invite and a request to answer some questions, and then if she's up for it then we could look through the questions we have and distill them to half a dozen or so. I just think that, if I were suddenly emailed with 16+ questions to answer, I would be a bit overwhelmed and less inclined to come to the performance. Just a thought...

Hi
We do not hire equipment for circus use, only TV and photo shoots etc. I believe that if you are a professional circus artiste you should have you own props.
Sorry

drawing of dead wives in theatre
Audience plan
Curtain Raiser
Also the rehearsal photos reminded me of that brilliant scene Krish, Heather, Jasmine and Rachel devised....I thikn we should include it somehow..may be in the bar before the show. I loved it...can we think about that...Zoe?

Lucy
Krish/Ellie: Can we have some Wagner?
Dead women: lets begin to think of each of your speeches as mini alternative forms presentations..expand them....and also lets do more work on the intention of the scene..what you are actually playing. Will work with you on friday afternoon.
Heather: Can you talk to Catia about how we might dress her space in the theatre...
Images people are posting are great. Will try and comment on them all. Rehearsal photos are great. hair and make up great.
Mikey don't forget to talk to Jules and Sim about train seat lights...can we rig each chair?
Great, great work!

More Diva Inspiration
Thomas pointed me to this great video of Maria Callas (thanks Thomas!)
Some of the still images really capture the combination of beauty and terror that I would like to achieve. Also, the footage of her singing is interesting from a physical point of view - her face and hands are expressive but her torso is perfectly still, no doubt to support the vocal technique.
And the Wagnerian singer Birgit Nilsson as Lady Macbeth:
Obviously the role demands a fierce intensity, but Nilsson herself naturally had a solid, formidable stance that seems to be ubiquitous for performing Wagner.
In an article for the New York Times, David Schiff writes:
"There are singers, and there are Wagnerian singers... In Wagner you don’t just fall in love, you fall in love with your best friend’s wife, or with your twin sister or, simultaneously, with a virgin and a whore. Even when Wagnerian characters are young, their souls seem burdened with several generations of tragic back stories. Every character appears torn between irreconcilable impulses, every voice contends with an orchestra that churns like a storm-tossed ocean. Wagnerian singing demands more than a fine instrument and technique. It has to be terrifying." (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/27/arts/music/27schi.html?_r=1&pagewanted=print)
This really struck a chord with me in terms of my character work - terrifying is the word...
Nilsson's obituary (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1507579/Birgit-Nilsson.html) gave me food for thought in terms of her background. There are also some wonderful stories about her diva tendencies!
I think I will start to base Diva's personality and history on Nilsson, and think of Maria Callas as physical inspiration - and see what happens...!

Bryony Lavery and Heather
Dear Zoe,
This is Bryony Lavery's e mail
Bryonylavery@btinternet.com
I wonder if you might write to her inviting her to the show (maybe when leflet is out) and also pick her brains a bit. Not sure what to ask have a think about it, write out some questions and consult with me and rest of group. Only Zoe to contact her please so she is not overwhelmed. Apparently she is keen on education.
Heather can you use some of your time to get rehearsal props in place (ie: napkins and opera scores etc. and everything) so that in the run on Friday we can have as much as possible on stage. Thanks. Lucy

Zoe can you remind me to schedule feedback on Marquis De Sade from people who have offered for next Tuesday. Also if you have character images I ahve not seen can you make sure you show them to me at an appropriate time please.
Also wanted to add how pleased I am about the work from everyone..I am really enjoying myself..don't worry if you are feeling insecure or paranoid or not used enough or stuff that is normal. Can everyone help each other to feel more secure!

Outreach
Jasmine,
How goes it?
I have a friend who teaches at a six form college and would like to bring 8 students to the matinee and possibly have workshop or after show discussion or something before? Can you contact him on jeff.hunter@rtc.uk.net and get the address to send leaflets to and find out how many tickets to reserve and negotiate what else he might get. Then send him the leaflets when they are out. Let me know if that is OK. Lucy

Set and props
Two things for set and props:
1) Can we keep the idea of whit lilies in our minds..???
2) my brother is production manager at The National Theatre and has access to their armoury (which is a whole room full of weapons!). We should be able to get sword and gun from him, in exhange for some flirting and maybe a bottle of scotch. Remind me to give you his e mail so oyu can set it up.

Comments about images
Many of the images are helping me to find a suitable posture for the housekeeper and designs for some costume, i.e head wrap, large skirt or dress.
